Celebrating International Women’s Day 2018
International Women’s Day commemorates women’s social, economic, political, and cultural achievements while calling for gender parity. The Local Network was proud to host and attend several events in the UAE leading up to International Women’s Day 2018.
The Launch of the Women Empowerment Principles Taskforce
We were excited to host the official launch of the Women Empowerment Principles (WEPs) taskforce on March 7th. The mission of the taskforce is to educate companies on the seven Principles, encourage them to sign a statement of support for the Principles, and take actions to empower women in the workplace, marketplace, and community.
Mahmoud Al Burai, Chair of the UAE Local Network and CEO of the Dubai Real Estate Institute, and Alice Laugher, Chair of the UAE WEPs Taskforce and CEO of Committed to Good, spoke about the importance of gender equality and their commitment to growing the number of WEP signatories.
Certificates of recognition were awarded to taskforce members and signatories, as well as volunteers, who are actively promoting the empowerment of women in the UAE.

French Companies in the UAE sign the Women’s Empowerment Principles (WEPs)
We were happy to attend a reception hosted by WEPs signatory Societe Generale, recognizing 22 French multinationals who expressed support of WEPs in the UAE. Richad Soundardjee, Group Chief Regional Officer of Societe Generale in the Middle East, gave the welcome speech. His Excellency and keynote speaker Sheikh Nahayan Mabarak Al Nahayan, Minister of State for Tolerance, and representatives from the French Embassy also attended the event.
As Mahmoud El Burai, Chairman of the Local Network, expressed, “We have an essential mandate: to advance the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), including SDG number 5 on gender equality”. The WEPs provide a means to fulfill this mandate; they serve as a platform to encourage greater private sector engagement and forge partnerships to advance women’s empowerment.
